It's the go-to answer — and for certain specific problems, it's the right one. But in our experience working drainage jobs across Middle Tennessee, French drains are also one of the most commonly installed solutions that end up not working.

We don't say that to knock other contractors. We say it because we've seen it enough times that it shapes how we approach drainage problems. When we walk a property and consider options, a French drain is usually not the first thing we reach for — and here's why.

The Two Ways French Drains Stop Working

A French drain is a perforated pipe buried in a gravel-filled trench. The idea is that water enters the gravel, works its way to the pipe, and gets channeled away. In principle it's sound. In practice, two things happen that cause most of the failures we see.

Failure #1: Sediment Fill

Over time — sometimes within a few years — homeowners add topsoil, mulch, or just let sod re-establish over the drain area. Fine particles work their way down through the gravel. Slowly, the voids in the gravel fill with sediment. The drain still exists underground, but it can no longer accept or move water at any meaningful rate. You end up with a non-draining trench and a yard that floods the same as before — except now there's also buried infrastructure to deal with.

Failure #2: Gravel Washout

When gravel isn't properly contained — either because geotextile fabric was skipped, installed poorly, or failed over time — Tennessee's heavy storm events push the rock out of position. That might be a slope, a dry creek, a roadside ditch, or a discharge point the water can reach by gravity. Because the pipe is solid and buried, there's nothing for sediment to infiltrate and no mechanism for failure the way a gravel-filled French drain trench has.

The key difference: A French drain manages water underground — it relies on water seeping through gravel to reach a perforated pipe. A surface drainage system to a catch basin captures water before it goes underground and moves it through a sealed system. One has a lot of ways to fail over time. The other has very few.

Why This Approach Holds Up Better

The advantages come down to how little can go wrong with a solid pipe system compared to a gravel trench.

When a French Drain Actually Is the Right Call

We're not saying French drains are never the answer. There are specific situations where they make sense, and we'll say so when we see one.

A French drain is worth considering when the problem is subsurface groundwater — when the ground stays saturated for days after rain stops, or when water seems to seep up from below rather than accumulate from above. If the yard is staying wet because the water table is high or because there's a subsurface flow path from uphill, a perforated pipe in gravel placed below the problem zone can intercept that water before it reaches the surface. That's what French drains were originally designed to do.

What they weren't designed to do is handle the volume of surface runoff that comes with a serious Middle Tennessee rainstorm. Using them as the primary solution for surface flooding is where we see them most often fall short.
